Properties of Shapes

Students learn about lines (parallel, perpendicular, angle properties), angles in polygons, angle facts around a point and on parallel lines, properties of triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons. They study congruence and similarity of shapes.

Example: Angle Facts

The sum of angles in a triangle is 180°. The sum of interior angles of an n-sided polygon is (n - 2) x 180°.

Mensuration

This covers calculating perimeters, areas, volumes and surface areas of 2D shapes (rectangles, triangles, circles) and 3D shapes (cubes, prisms, cylinders, spheres). Students use relevant formulas like πr^2 for circle area.

Example: Volume of a Cylinder

Given: Radius = 4 cm, Height = 10 cm

Volume = πr^2h

= π × 4^2 × 10 = 503 cm^3

Pythagoras and Trigonometry

Pythagoras' Theorem relates sides in a right-angled triangle. Trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) are used to find missing sides and angles. This links to solving problems involving bearings and scale diagrams.

Circle Geometry

Circle theorems like the angle at the center is twice the angle at the circumference, angles in a semicircle, tangent properties, and more are studied.

Vectors and Transformations

Vectors are used to describe translations. Reflections, rotations, and enlargements are covered under transformations of shapes.
